On 20 September 2017 the UN Secretary-General opened the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons for signature at the United Nations in New York. I urge you to sign this landmark agreement.

Right now, the threat of nuclear war is again looming over us. This treaty shows that the majority of the world considers nuclear weapons both illegitimate and illegal.

Your signature will contribute to strengthening the norm against the possession and use of nuclear weapons. As with previous weapons prohibitions, changing international norms leads to concrete changes in policies and behaviors, even in states not party to the treaty.

I wish you the best of luck in the work to prohibit and eliminate nuclear weapons. Be assured that people from all over the world will stand with you in this most important and urgent endeavor.

Yours sincerely,
